The Likhaan Group Accentuates its 35th Anniversary with a Conference on Creativity and Inventiveness
The Likhaan Group celebrated its 35th anniversary on 07 July 2008, foundation day of The InventSchool. The Celebration started with short workshop-meetings of the Board of Directors on July 2 and the working team on July 7, followed by the launching of the Likhaan website on July 18. A lecture-workshop on creativity and thinking will be held on August 16 at the World Citi Colleges (WCC), Aurora Boulevard near Anonas Avenue in Quezon City.
The celebration will be accentuated by a half-day conference on “The InventSchool: Promoting Creativity and Inventive Activities in Schools, Colleges and Universities” in the Philippines to be held in January 2009 (date to be announched later) at 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Conference Hall of the Quezon City Academy. A special lecture-workshop on “Creativity and Thinking” will highlight the conference program. The conference is open to all educators, teachers and students in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The 35th anniversary celebration will continue until December 2008 through the conduct of free lecture-workshops on ‘creativity and thinking’ in different schools, colleges and universities in Metro-Manila and nearby provinces, as well as in Baguio City.
Lecture-workshop schedules for other schools and colleges are still being finalized. These are St. Mary’s College, Stella Maris College, Quezon City Science High School, Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School, J.P. Likhaan revives ‘Creativity Network’ and reorganizes its regional branches and alliance network
Likhaan recently revived ‘The Creativity Network’ as its pool of human resources. The Creativity Network (TCN) is a loose organization of volunteers helping TLG in the implementation of its programs, projects and activities.
Its members are assisted in developing their creative abilities by providing them training that encourages them to learn to think creatively, build their insight and intuition, and improve their inventive thinking skills.
Likhaan is also reorganizing its branches and alliance network in five (5) regional clusters this month. These are the following:
- Likhaan National Capital & Northern-Southern Tagalog Alliance (Metro-Manila, Northern-Southern Tagalog & nearby areas) – Quezon City
- Likhaan North Luzon Alliance (Northern and Central Luzon) – Baguio City
- Likhaan Bicol Alliance (Bicol Region) – Legazpi City
- Likhaan Visayan Alliance (Visayan Region) – Cebu City
- Likhaan Mindanao Alliance (Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago) – Davao City
Sakahang Bayan Program
The Social Inventions & Community Innovations, Inc. (SICI) is looking for a pilot area where the Sakahang Bayan (People’s Farm) will be implemented.
Sakahang Bayan is a start-up corporate community-building project in agricultural and fishing communities is a productivity-cum-extension service program designed to improve the livelihood of the rural people, more particularly farmers and fisherfolks. The program is a development-oriented, corporate-cooperative farming and/or fishing system consisting of the following interactive components:
1) A new method and technique of organic farming and/or sustainable fish production
2) A corporate-cooperative-compact farm and/or fishery association
3) A mutually beneficial sharing scheme
4) Diversified community-based economic development planning
5) Integrated community development and resource management program
The Program will institute the Sakahang Bayan Association or Cooperative as an economic organization composed of farmers/fishermen on a voluntary and mutually beneficial basis.
The InventSchool offers orientation seminars on technical inventions and social innovations
The InventSchool is now offering two orientation seminars: 1) Technological Invention Seminar, and 2) Social Invention Seminar.
The two seminars may be taken as one integrated seminar entitled ‘Technological & Social Invention Seminar.’
The InventSchool also offers three other courses for educators and teachers. These are: 1) Orientation Seminar-Workshop on Thinking, Creativity and Creative Teaching/Learning 2) Creative Teaching and Instructional Innovations, 3) Workshop on Creative Education and Innovative Learning.
CHRONOLOGY OF THE LIKHAAN GROUP: Part 2 – 1995-2008
1995 – April 30, Centre for Education, Training & Development (CETD) was organized. August, the Institute for Social Invention (ISI) in London, UK cited The InventSchool in its publication, Best Ideas - A Compendium of Social Innovations and the ‘Global Ideas Bank’ on the Internet. Meanwhile, in the same month Likhaan formulated ‘MICROPOLIS’ as a strategy for developing small urban communities in metropolitan areas, small cities and poblacion of municipalities. [Note: “MICROPOLIS” literally means small city from Gr. Micros, small + polis, city. It is a term coined in by R.N.M. Aboganda, LIFI-SICI chairperson. Micropolis is a human settlement strategy towards integrated development of the barangays with existing urban pattern. It seeks the organized redevelopment of cities-within-cities or the small urban areas like puroks (neighborhoods), barangays or cluster of barangays of the metropolis, small cities and municipal poblacion in the Philippines, with considerable attention given to slums and squatter areas.] SICI-LIFI conducted development studies on “Corporate Communities” (Sambayanihan) while ENRI Continued preparing the environmental management scheme (E·M·S) for city and urban barangays. Studies on community resource management system (R·M·S).
1996 – Started the preparation of SciTeC course program manuals and initial course outline for social inventions. Continued literature research and educational studies on creativity and invention and updated the training materials on creativity, technological innovations and social inventions. Started the preparation of trainers’ guidebook and students’ workbook for SciTeC courses. Initiated research studies on Community Innovation Models (C·I·M) to promote the development of selected communities in the countryside, covering social, economic, cultural and physical aspects. Guide to Environmental Management System (E·M·S) for Municipal and Barangay LGUs updated by ENRI. November 30, the Social Productivity Centre (SPC) was set up.
1997 – Continued preparation of SciTeC course program training manuals and teachers’ guide. July, The InventSchool developed a new educational program parallel to SciTeC courses called the “Creativity in Social Inventions and Community Innovations Course” or the SinCom Course Program. Accordingly, the educational program of TISI was reorganized into two (2) major course programs: 1) Technological Inventions Division (TID) and 2) Social Inventions Division (SID). Developed two SinCom training courses adopting SciTeC 1 and SciTeC 2 and started preparation of other SinCom course designs and training materials. Likhaan conducted development planning and research studies on mountain agriculture, upland dwellers and forest communities, covering social, economic, cultural and physical aspects. Continued research studies on Community Innovation Models (C·I·M) and development studies on “Corporate Communities” (Sambayanihan). December 12, The Creativity Network (TCN) was set up for advocates of creativity and inventions.
1998 – Continued literature research, educational studies and preparation of SciTeC and SinCom course programs, training materials and teaching guides. Prepared project paper on “Environmental Management for Sustainable Agriculture and Agro-Industrial Development.” July 7, Likhaan Resource Information Centre (LRIC) was activated. Desk studies and preliminary field researches on indigenous knowledge and traditional technologies. September, ‘MACROPOLIS’ was conceptualized as a strategy for national and regional urban development focus on metropolitan areas and big cities. Likhaan conducted extensive studies on the C·I·M program designed to create community development models for selected communities in small islands, coastal, lowland, upland and highland areas. [Note: “MACROPOLIS” literally means enlarged city (from Gr. makros, long, enlarge + polis, city) as differentiated from “megalopolis” (Gk. mega, great + polis, city) defined as vast, continuously urban area, covering any number of cities. J. Gottman, who introduced the term “megalopolis,” defined it as an urban area containing over 35 million people.]
1999 – January 20, Centre for International Studies & Understanding (CISU) organized. Started the upgrading and standardization of SciTeC and SinCom course programs instructional materials, training manuals and teaching guides. Continuing and special courses added. Mid-1999, Guide to Municipal Environmental Management System (E·M·S) for LGUs prepared. Conceptualized two new projects: 1) Sakahang Bayan – a start-up corporate community-building project in agricultural and fishing communities; and 2) Sambayanihan – a new concept of “corporate community.” Proposed strategic development program of the Province of Leyte using the human settlement approach.
2000 – January, started scientific experiments on “cosmic energy” with inventors Viktor Korionoff and Meynard dela Paz as principal investigators. [Undertaken within the umbrella of LIFI.] April, proposal for a “Greater Metro Manila: Strategic Development Study and Human Settlement Master Plan for Local Governance” submitted to JICA. May 17-19, conducted the “2nd Summer Institute on Scientific & Technological Creativity” at Quezon City Academy, Quezon City. June 18, triggered by ‘MICROPOLIS’ and ‘MACROPOLIS’ strategies, The Human Settlements Institute (THSI) was established. July, introduced Creativity in Business Entrepreneurship to MBA students in the Graduate School of De La Salle University at Greenhills, San Juan City. Developed additional SciTeC and SinCom continuing and special courses. Meanwhile, ‘PROJECT: MICROPOLIS’ was adapted as a major development program of DILG-NCR, with pilot barangays in Quezon City. Developed the “Planning Guide to Community Visioning and Strategic Urban Development.” [This planning guide was updated, enlarged and re-titled “Development Management System (D·M·S): Development Planning Guides”.] November 30, a new Likhaan Group (LGO) was proposed in a meeting at Merced Bakehouse in Quezon City. Although LGO was once again approved in principle, no decision was made to officially organize LGO until 2003.
2001 – March 14, the Management & Governance Institute (MAGI) organized. “Local Governance System for Urban Development” conceptualized. June, fully developed the Development Management System [D·M·S]: DEVELOPMENT PLANNING GUIDES – (1) Community Information & Planning System (CIPS): A Guide to Community Visioning & Strategic Barangay Development Planning [CV·SBDP], (2) Community Innovations & Development System (CIDS): A Guide to Social Innovations & Strategic Projects for Barangay Development [SI·SPDP], (3) Project Development & Implementation System (PDIS): A Guide to Designing Innovations and Implementing Projects for Barangay Development [DI·IPBD]. July, introduced the Development Management System (D·M·S) in five (5) Barangay LGUs in Quezon City in coordination with DILG-NCR. Updated ‘MICROPOLIS’ Development project proposal with an integrated solid waste management scheme as major a feature. November 28-29, “2nd Orientation Seminar Workshop on Thinking, Creativity and Creative Teaching for Teachers & Educators” at Quezon City Academy, Quezon City. Completed The InventSchool comprehensive regular educational program with set of courses, program of studies, curricular content (outline), and learning set-up.
2002 – March 14, Special Projects & Development Concerns (SPDC) organized. April, developed course design on “Stimulating Creativity & Inventiveness of Students” and worked on course materials for SinCom (social inventions) courses. Started preparation of a guidebook and training manual on “Governance & Management System (G·M·S) for Municipal & Barangay LGUs.” Study on the Integration of Development Plans and Programs in Metro Manila and Surrounding Provinces for Effective Local Governance – for the in-country development study program of JICA. Continued studies on community resource management system (R·M·S). New training courses added to the comprehensive educational program of The InventSchool; content outline drawn up. Continuing studies on possible communities for the C·I·M program in selected small islands, coastal, lowland, upland and highland areas.
2003 – Early March, the solid waste management project, the first project component of ‘MICROPOLIS’ was implemented by DILG-NCR under a Swedish consultancy firm with funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) of Sweden. March 14, The Energaea Institute established and subsequently affiliated with Likhaan in May. Started desk studies on non-conventional sources of energy. Lecture guide on “Creative Teaching & Instructional Innovations” prepared. Developed lateral training courses and content outline under the comprehensive educational program, curricular structure and topic outlines. Continue preparation of “Guide to Fiscal Administration & Financial Management System (F·M·S) for Municipal & Barangay LGUs.” Started desk studies on “unconventional sources of energy.” October, developed preliminary “Guide to Solid Waste Management Planning for Urban Barangays.”
2004 – LIKHAAN assisted QC-HURA in preparing a “Guide to Community Organizing & Development Process for Participative, Community-Based Housing and Urban Renewal”. The Centre for Simulation and Gaming (CSG) set-up on April 30. Formulated special training courses under the comprehensive educational program, curricular structure and course outline. In association with the municipal government of Bauang, La Union, prepared project proposal for SIDA of Sweden entitled “Municipal Environmental Protection & Solid Waste Management.” Continued desk studies on non-conventional sources of energy.
2005 – Early March, started business planning for the Likhaan Enterprises as a new business arm of Likhaan. Developed annual institute, conference and workshops under the comprehensive educational program. Lecture guide on “Creativity in Education” for Teacher’s Forum on Creativity in Education completed. May, training designs prepared for courses in public management and local governance. Fully developed the C·I·M Program, which seeks to promote the development of selected communities in the Philippine countryside, particularly in five (5) agro-ecological resource zones: Small islands, coastal, lowland, upland and highland communities. Selected urban communities are considered as special C·I·M areas. Started new desk studies: “Metropolitan Cities in an Expanding National Capital Region (Metro-Manila)” and “Energy for Community Development.” December 12, the Likhaan Volunteer Corps (LVC) created.
2006 – Prepare C·I·M project implementation schemes for five (5) agro-ecological resource zones: Small islands, coastal, lowland, upland and highland communities and special C·I·M areas. June, course manual on “Creative Problem-Solving and Decision-Making (CPSDM)” revised. Continued desk studies on energy for community development. Prepared teaching guide to “Operational Mechanism of Creativity and Thinking (OMCaT),” a specialized 16-week course for college students. Continued preparation of comprehensive development guidebooks and training manuals for LGUs. March, a creativity research project was put forward to interview selected Filipino personalities in the fields of fine arts, music, performing arts and literature—painting, sculpture, drawing, illustration; music composition and song writing; drama, dance, music and other theatrical arts; and literary and journalistic works. The purpose is to define the meaning of ‘creativity’ in these fields; discover the creative personality, process, environment/conditions and product; and find out how creativity works in arts and literature. July 7, The Likhaan Group (TLG), replacing the proposed LGO, finally organized and incorporated on December 18. Conducted business development studies on “Likhaan Enterprises” as a TLG-sponsored manufacturing-marketing firm. Mid-December, TLG worked on the translation of Book 1 of the Harry Potter series of seven books. This revived the interest of Likhaan to promote the artistic facet of creativity, particularly fine arts, decorative crafts, and literary works, as well as the performing arts, music and songs.
2007 – Continuing preparation, updating and improvement of SciTeC and SinCom training materials and other educational programs and training courses. Developed C·I·M project sytems framework for five (5) agro-ecological resource zones and special C·I·M areas. Continue studies on integrated solid waste management for cities and urban barangays. May, Likhaan Enterprises was organized as the new business project of Likhaan Group. August 22, TLG brought back the original concept of the forerunners of Likhaan, which began in 1967 and 1969 as a small group that promote arts and literature. It created the Creative Institute for Arts & Literature (CIAL) with particular focus on the promotion and encouragement of the creation of beautiful or thought-provoking works in painting, sculpture, drawings, illustrations, crafts and decorative designs, music and songs, literature and journalistic writing, as well as literary work for the performing arts (drama, dance and music). CIAL seeks to develop artistic ability (creative ability and skill of an artist, or the expression of this aspect of creativity) and the appreciation of the beauty and worth of art, and its usefulness in human development and culture. Started desk studies on fine arts, music, performing arts (drama, dance and music). April, Likhaan redefine its restarting points for organizational reactivation. May, creativity research project identified in March 2006 reactivated—project proposal revised. June, started preparation of new TLG-SDP. July, Likhaan’s 35th anniversary celebration. July 18, launched the Likhaan website (likhaan.com). Likhaan establishes The European Centre and The Nordic Centre
The Likhaan Group established on July 31 two new operating centers. These are The European Centre (TEC) and The NordiCentre (TNC), both operating units of the Centre for International Studies & Understanding (CISU). It is dedicated to the study of the European countries and the development of educational, social, cultural and trade relations between the Philippines and the nations of Europe and the Nordic countries, particularly Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
The principal objectives of Likhaan in creating The European Centre and The NordiCentre are, among others, the following:
1. To promote friendship and mutual understanding between and among the peoples of the Philippines and the European nations and the Nordic countries.
2. To foster trade, scientific, educational and cultural relations between and among the peoples of the Philippines and Europe.
3. To help transform collective interests among the peoples of the Philippines and the European countries into positive and mutually beneficial relations.
4. To serve as the facilitative mechanism for forging business and industrial relations between and among Filipinos and European/Nordic nationals.
5. To encourage business and trade, scientific and cultural exchanges between organizations, groups and individuals of the Philippines and the European/Nordic countries.
6. To strengthen relations between and among social, cultural and economic institutions in the Philippines and the European/Nordic countries.
7. To conduct research studies for enriching knowledge of the social, cultural and economic conditions of the Philippines and the European/Nordic countries, and their peoples.
8. To formulate and implement programs, projects and activities responsive to the common needs of the peoples of the Philippines and European/Nordic countries.
The European Centre and The NordiCentre intends to set-up a system of people-to-people and organization-to-organization partnerships through business-trade, scientific-technological, social-cultural and economic programs, projects and activities. The initial programs/projects of the Centre include, among others, the following: Socio-economic and cultural exhibits of the Nordic countries in different schools, colleges and universities in Metro-Manila, Metro-Cebu, Metro-Davao, and other regional centers and major cities of the country.

40th IFIA Jubilee Celebration

The International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) celebrates its 40th Jubilee Celebrations, General Assembly and Conference to be held during the Inventor Festival dubbed as the 6th International Exhibition Inventions Suzhou (IEIS) 2008 on 16-21 October.
The Festival will be held at Suzhou International Expo Center (SuzhouExpo) located in the Central Business District (CBD) core area of the Suzhou industrial park, situated just north of the extraordinarily beautiful and graceful JinJi Lake, the largest interior lake in China.
The 6th IEIS is jointly organized by the China Association of Invention (CAI), IFIA and the Government of Suzhou city, supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Intellectual Property Office, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the China Association of Science and Technology and Government of Jiangsu Province.
IEIS will highlight the subject of mass innovation and harmonious development, focus on saving energy, reducing discharge, serving for the peasants, country and agriculture, and take displaying exchange, awarding inventions, promoting transfer and creating atmosphere as main contents of the Exhibition. There will be over 30 foreign delegations from Asia, Europe, North America and Africa participating in the fair in addition to various internal inventors’ organizations from the Provinces, Autonomous Regions, Municipal Cities, Ministries of the State Council, PLA Military Agencies, the Hong Kong and the Macao Special Administration Regions and Taiwan. There will be over 3000 participating inventions occupying about 1000 display booths in Expo.
